Black locust outlasts pressure-treated lumber, looks stunning, and is nontoxic. It has been a favorite in the Appalachian mountains for centuries. We like to use it for posts, rails, and decking.

Rhododendron and mountain laurel shrubs love our acidic, depleted soils. They are, however, toxic to animals and to other plants. We clear them as part of our sustainable forestry management plan. We use them to create the basket-weave railing design.
